ONS Publishing and the EnvironmentDid you know that the plastic bag that your ONS periodicals (Oncology Nursing Forum, Clinical Journal of Oncology Nursing, and ONS Connect) are mailed in is recyclable? ONS uses this clear “polybag” to save significant postage costs that would be incurred otherwise. This polybag is type 4 – LDPE – which is also the type of plastic used for many shopping store bags. Check out your local chain grocery store for bins where you can drop these bags off to be recycled. ONS periodicals are printed by a company that is actively involved in environmental initiatives. IPC Print Services uses soy-based inks to eliminate the need for chemically based inks. In 2007, IPC recycled 8,448.24 net tons (16,976,480 pounds) of paper. By doing so, the printer prevented more than 509,294 pounds of air pollution effluents from being released into the air. In addition, 144,300 trees, 59,417,680 gallons of water, and 25,465 cubic yards of landfill space were saved (Source: Louis Padnos Iron & Metal Co.). To learn more about our printer’s environmental stewardship, click here. When you are finished with your periodicals, please recycle them. To learn more about recycling, visit www.epa.gov/earthday.
