Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality
in women worldwide. Persistent infection with oncogenic forms of
Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), most frequently contracted through
vaginal intercourse, is necessary for the development of cervical
cancer and high-grade precursor lesions. HPV is the most prevalent
sexually transmitted disease. This session focuses on the epidemiology,
etiology, prevention and early detection, diagnosis, staging, and
management of both pre-invasive and invasive cervical cancer. Recent
advances in surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy are reviewed and
nursing management of these patients are highlighted. A cervical
cancer survivor presents her story and what it means to live with
cervical cancer.
