The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) has released Oncology Nurse Navigator Core Competencies, a compilation of 40 competencies divided into four categories – education, professionalism, coordination of care, and communication. Also included is an oncology nurse navigator practice framework and a clear definition of what an oncology nurse navigator does.
ONS Enhances National Conferences Format to Deliver One Power-Packed Event

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) announced a change in its future conference offerings at its Connections: Advancing Care Through Science conference. Beginning in 2014, Connections: Advancing Care Through Science and the annual ONS Congress will be consolidated into one national meeting. In 2014 and 2015, ONS will evolve the current Congress format to incorporate programs that serve all of our members, novice to expert oncology nurses in general and advanced specialty practice, management, education, and research.
Paula Rieger to Retire as CEO of ONS

The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) announces that Paula Rieger, RN, MSN, CAE, FAAN, will retire as ONS’s chief executive officer (CEO) effective May 16, 2014. It was a personal decision to step away from full-time employment to spend more time with her family.

Oncology Nursing Society Issues Joint Position Statement on Implementing Screening for Psychosocial Distress

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer will require that cancer centers implement screening programs for psychosocial distress by 2015 as a new criterion for accreditation. In response to that requirement, the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS), and the Association of Oncology Social Workers (AOSW), developed a joint position statement on implementing psychosocial distress screening for patients undergoing cancer treatment.
