The Mary Scherbring Conference Scholarship was established in 2007 by the Southeast Minnesota Chapter of ONS in memory of their colleague Mary Scherbring.  Mary, a long time member of the Southeast Minnesota Chapter, was an oncology nurse at the Mayo Clinic when she was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma in February 2007.  Mary, an advocate for oncology nursing continuing education, chaired the planning committee for the 2006 ONS Institutes of Learning conference.

Scholarship:
Recipients of this award will receive a $1,000 educational scholarship to apply toward ONS Institutes of Learning Conference registration, travel to and from the conference and per diem conference expenses.*  The conference registration fee will be automatically deducted from grant prior to payment.

This year an additional $500 funding is available from the Oncology Hematology Care to support a Cincinnati Tri-State Chapter member who meets the recommended cut score. If a Cincinnati Tri-State candidate falls at the top of the cut score, they are eligible to receive the funds from both scholarships.

Qualifications:

  1. The applicant must be a registered nurse involved in cancer nursing.
  2. The applicant must describe how their attendance at this conference will make a difference in their practice.
  3. A biographical data sheet and essay addressing the applicant's role as an oncology nurse and how attending the ONS Institutes of Learning Conference will impact their practice and the patients in their care.  Applicants must address how they plan to share the information they learn with other nursing colleagues.   The essay must not exceed 350 words and must not have been previously submitted to the ONS Foundation for another award and funded. Word count must be inserted after the essay.
  4. The nominee must be able to attend the conference specific for the award in its entirety.

Note: An individual cannot receive this award more than one time.

Application deadline: September 1, 2010
